After the morning storm cleared to a bright and sunny afternoon, many of Australia’s leading players tuned up for the start of the 2012 Men’s and Women’s Victorian Open during today’s Pro-Am amongst a plethora of celebrities, corporate supporters, media and State and club officials.

rn

Within the afternoon field was the youngest ever winner of an open age State level golf event in 10-year-old Sheradyn Johnson. Together with her father and Safety Beach professional Shane Johnson, Sheradyn won the 2011 Sir Dallas Brooks Trophy at Metropolitan just before Christmas.

Despite only taking up golf a year ago, the Osborne Primary School student in Mt Martha took a week off school to combine with her dad to win the coveted Mixed Foursomes title by defeating professional Tom Dreher and Royal Melbourne’s Alison Mighell four-and-three in the 18-hole final.

rn

The victory was even more significant given Shane’s father Kevin and sister Michelle (herself now a women’s professional) won the Sir Dallas Brooks Trophy in 1985 when Michelle was just 13.

Playing in today’s pro-am with Korean women’s professional Haeji Kang, Sheradyn was “having a great time. Haeji’s really, really good and it’s great to have the chance to play with her.”

rn

Amongst other celebrities to play in the Pro-Am were AFL Footy Show personality Sam Newman; Gold medallist shooter Russell Mark; Australian Hockey champion Jay Stacey; children’s television presenter Shura Taft; new Golf Australia Board member Malcolm Speed and 3AW’s Graeme Bond.
