By Alistair Hogg at Royal Canberra Golf Club Australia has won the inaugural Trans Tasman Cup by one point after surviving a thrilling charge from the New Zealanders at Royal Canberra Golf Club late this afternoon. The home side went into the afternoon foursome matches ahead by three but the Kiwis pounced, seizing five of the last eight points to almost snatch victory but just fell short 24 1/2 to 23 1/2. Despite winning overall, the Aussies only managed to come out on top of one of the four categories with the girls flying the flag. Their 9 1/2 to 2 1/2 victory gave Australia enough of a cushion to scrape home and claim the trophy. Tony Hallam, CEO of Golf Australia said, “All of the players in this inaugural Trans Tasman Cup are to be commended for their skills and the manner in which they represented their countries. It was great to see such tight competition and we look forward to making this a premier event on the Australian and New Zealand golfing calendars.” Stephanie Na and Ashlee Dewhurst were standout performers for Australia as they remained undefeated across the tournament. Na was clinical in the singles winning two-up and 6&4 while Dewhurst twice combined with Whitney Hillier to maintain the pressure on the Kiwis. Much of Australia&aposs early drive came from Emma Bennett who claimed both of her singles matches in convincing fashion but had no luck in the foursomes. Matthew Giles also performed well for the home team winning his opening day singles and staging a spectacular comeback to halve his match against Samuel Shin today. Danny Lee was New Zealand&aposs standout competitor winning both singles matches and playing a vital role in the open men&aposs foursomes, also claimed by the Kiwis. Sean Riordan dominated the boys&apos division while Penny Newbrook led by example in the open women&aposs category winning three of her matches and squaring one. However the performance of the Australian girls proved to be the difference as their blow-out win assured overall victory for the hosts despite narrowly dropping the other three categories.
