AUSTRALIAN MEN S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP A host of leading players fell at the first hurdle on the opening day of Match Play at the Australian Amateur Championships at Woodlands Golf Club. Jake Higginbottom (NSW), Ryan McCarthy (Tas), Oliver Goss(WA) and Anthony Murdaca (SA) all lost in the opening round while defending champion Matt Stieger progressed to the second round with a 2&1 win. Victorian pair Nathan Holman and Todd Sinnott were also victorious while the international contingent boasts 11 players from Germany, England, Ireland and New Zealand who earnt their places in Friday s second round. Two time runner up Ben Campbell (NZ) is still in contention for a third time lucky shot at the title. Medallist Cameron Smith accounted for Victorian Chris Winkler 4&3. A total of 32 players now head into tomorrow s two rounds. The second and third elimination Match Play rounds take place on Friday. AUSTRALIAN WOMEN S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP There were more upsets in the Australian Women’s Amateur Championship as the final sixteen head into Friday s second elimination round at Woodlands Golf Club. The upset of the day went to Long Island member Montana Strauss (Vic) who defeated World Number 3 Cecilia Cho (NZ) 5&3. Defending champion Ashlee Dewhurst (Tas) lost to Queensland s Christina Mew to end her defence of the title. World Number 1 Lydia Ko (NZ) eased into the second round with a 5&3 win over Victorian Jacinta Brideson. Japanese pair Kotone Hori and Rio Watanabe also progressed to the second round. National Squad members Jaimee Dougan (QLD) and Su Hyun Oh (Vic) both recorded convincing 7&5 victories. The second elimination Match Play round take place on Friday.
