Round 2: Back to Back for Kyle

In one of the most picturesque settings for a golf course Bright Country Golf Club is a pleasure to visit.

Players arrived at the club this morning for the final round of the Victorian Country Championships and Victorian Junior Country Regions and where greeted with bacon and egg rolls, coffee and juice.

The Victorian Men’s Country Championships went to Shepparton Golf Clubs Kyle Michel who continued his great form with a 2 under par 70 which included four birdies in a row on holes 13 to 16.

Successfully defending his 2015 title Michel finished at 5 under par for the tournament with Nathan Schneider from Beechworth Golf Club finishing 2nd with even par.

Cooper Gill has become the Victorian Boy’s Country Champion for the first time playing consistent golf over two rounds carding 73, 74 (147) for a total of 4 over par. Gill from Hamilton Golf Club won by one shot from fellow Western District team member Caleb Perry.

In the Victorian Junior Country Regions Golf Geelong have won on a count back from Western District both on a total of 942.

It was a great result for the Geelong boys to come from behind and take out the championship.

The handicap team title went to Goulburn Valley who were 9 strokes better than the rest.

Round 1: Michel & Western District lead at Myrtleford

Victorian Men's, Colts & Boys Country Championships and Victorian Junior Country Regions first round was played in 32 degree heat at the beautiful Myrtleford Golf Club this afternoon.

Defending Victorian Men’s Country Champion Kyle Michel from Shepparton Golf Club played "scrappy golf", according to himself, on his way to a 3 under par 68. Next best in the Men’s Championship is Tom McLean with even par 71. McLean is representing North East District Golf Association and plays his golf at Benalla Golf Club. Four players Caleb Perry, Cooper Gill, Daniel Gill and Darren Edwards are tied in third place on two over par 73. The tight layout at Myrtleford made for some really imaginative recovery shots throughout the round. It will be interesting to see how players deal with the contrast of playing a different course at Bright Golf Club tomorrow.

A multi tee start will begin at 8am tomorrow morning at Bright Golf Club in what is forecast to be another 32 degree day.

In the Victorian Junior Country Regions the best 6 stroke scores from a team of 9 count towards a team’s score.

Remarkably Western District lead after the first round having only fielded a team of 6. All players pitched in for a total score of 461 to lead locals North Eastern DGA on 466.

North Eastern however lead the handicap teams event with a total of 430. It will make for an interesting contest tomorrow as Western, North Eastern and Geelong are all within 8 shots.

Great hospitality was provided by the Myrtleford Golf Club on the day with the lunches and dinners a hit with all the players.
