Austin Bautista made a vow on Saturday night to not look at a leader board at all on Sunday.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>The Bonnie Doon Golf Club member had little to lose, starting the final round of the Federal Amateur Championship four shots behind third round leader Nicholas Watts and didn’t want to know where he was standing in the National Ranking Event.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>That was until he saw his father, Dan on the 16th hole.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“I looked over to Dad on the 16th and asked him what was the lead,” Bautista says. ”He just pointed at me and said, you are by eight.”

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>The massive margin with only two holes to play took plenty of pressure from the 18 year-old’s shoulders and gave him some time to enjoy the biggest moment in his golf career.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“I was over the moon playing the 17th, I birdied it, then I was all smiles walking up the 18th.”

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>After making a two-putt par from about 13 metres on the last hole, Bautista had the title in his hands, winning by nine shots from Dylan Perry of the Vintage Golf Club.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“It's actually a great feeling knowing I have just picked up a National Ranking Event,” he says.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>Bautista put together four impressive rounds of golf, and announced himself to plenty of golf fans in the process. A first round 1-over par 73 was followed by rounds of 66, 65, and 68 for a 16-under par total of 272.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>Bautista was a little philosophical after his 1-over par start.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“I said to Dad if Adam Scott can win a PGA Tour event after a 1-over par start I can win this too.”

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“I was still pretty confident however,” he says.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>Bautista had complete control of his game over the final three rounds, hitting it solidly and making plenty of putts.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“I hit it pretty well all weekend, and the putter worked well too.”

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“It’s great to have a big win under my belt, I can continue to go out and play well now.”

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>Bautista joins an impressive list of winners of the Federal Amateur, many of whom have gone on to big professional careers, including names like Geoff Ogilvy, Mark Leishman and Alistair Presnall.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>He feels he’s now got something to improve on coming into the big summer events, and first off is pre-qualifying for the NSW Open Golf Championship.

pan style=”font-size:12px;”>“7.17 at Liverpool tomorrow,” he says.” I’m actually on the bus back home now.”
