Blue Mountains golf clubs aid bushfire efforts

AGCSA superintendent members Nathan Ball (Springwood Country Club) and Luke Skinner (Blackheath Golf Club) have had a nervous week as the NSW bushfire crisis reached its peak in the Blue Mountains. Dams on both golf courses were used regularly by water bombing helicopters as the fires threatened and in some cases destroyed nearby properties, but fortunately neither course has come under direct threat to this stage. Springwood Country Club’s northern boundary runs right along Linksview Rd, one of the areas worst affected by the fires which started last Thursday. In fact Ball and his assistant were the first ones on the scene when the original fire broke out. According to the NSW Rural Fire Service, 193 homes were subsequently destroyed in 3300 hectare Linksview/Springwood fire with a further 109 sustaining damaged. While Ball and his staff were thankfully spared, many of the homes affected belonged to members of the club.
