Burgess and Osborne victorious at Mid-Amateur

Michael Burgess and Belinda Osborne have been crowned the 2014 Men’s and Women’s Mid-Amateur Champions following the final round at the Southern Golf Club this morning.
Like yesterday, players were presented with ideal scoring conditions with only a light southerly breeze making an appearance as the day progressed. The final day of play shaped up perfectly with a number of players well within striking distance of the overnight leaders in both the men’s and women’s sections.
Burgess will be the tenth person to have his name engraved on the men’s trophy after closing with a one over-par 73 to sit nicely alongside his 72 yesterday. Trailing by three shots heading into today’s final round, the Commonwealth member was able to overtake the stiff competition to finish on a tournament total of 145.
Teeing off the 1st, Burgess started strong with four consecutive pars before a birdie on the 5th hole to go one-under. A late bogey on the 9th gave Burgess an outward nine of level par. With the Championship in his sight, the 1 marker remained steady and came home with a one-over 37 to secure victory.
The Mid-Amateur trophy will now sit alongside the Mixed Foursomes Championship in Burgess’ trophy cabinet, after he, and his playing partner Jo Charlton won the title in late 2013.
Woodlands’ Matt Ledger was narrowly defeated for top honnors, with the 33 year old closing with 76 to be placed just a single shot behind Burgess. Joint overnight leader Stephen Pickering was next best in the Men’s Championship, one shot further back after rounds of 69 and 78.
In the Women’s Championship, Belinda Osborne from Kingston Heath came from a two shot deficit to take out the prized title for 2014. Following her opening round of 78, Osborne’s front nine of four over 40 placed her in a strong position as the overnight frontrunner, Lisa Holmquest, struggled to gain any momentum. Like Burgess, Osborne maintained her poise coming in, duplicating her 40 on the back nine to prevail with a 36-hole total of 158.
Defending Champion Holmquest returned 85 today to sit three shots in arrears of the Champion. Queenslander Rhondelle Ollett was a further three shots adrift and outright third on 164.
In the men’s nett component, it was Dean Cowled that prevailed after accompanying his 68 at Sandhurst yesterday with a 71 in the final round at his home club to better his 8 handicap by a brilliant five shots over the two days. Fellow Southern compatriot Philip Smith was four shots back on 143.
The women’s nett section was taken home by Sarah Cockell of Huntingdale, with rounds of 73 and 82 nett for a total of 155 off a handicap of 15. Vikki Templeton claimed the runner-up prize on 156 on a count back from Ruth Iser.
Golf Victoria wishes to extend a special thanks to Sandhurst and Southern Golf Clubs for their continued support towards golf in Victoria.

Round 1 – 2014 Victorian Mid-Amateur Championship’s Underway

The 2014 Victorian Men’s and Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship’s commenced this afternoon at Sandhurst Golf Club.  Players contested the par 72 Champions course in relatively calm and pleasant conditions – conducive for good scoring.

105 male and female golfers assembled today to compete in one of Victoria’s premier and ever expanding state Championships. The men’s and women’s titles are now embarking on their 10th and 4th years respectively, with 2014 marking the third time that the both titles have been held simultaneously.
Anglesea’s Brett Balloch and Eastern’s Stephen Pickering are tied for the lead in the men’s title after the pair carded stellar three under-par rounds of 69 this afternoon. The duo are solitary shot ahead of Woodlands’ Matt Ledger who found himself four under through 14 holes but had to settle with a very credible two under 70 after a couple of late bogies.
Joining Balloch, Pickering and Ledger in tomorrow’s final grouping is Kim Johnson of Long Island – all fighting to etch their name on the cup for 2014.
Meanwhile the defending champion, Lisa Holmquest (pictured) is poised at the top of the women’s leader board following an opening round of 76. The Sandhurst local outclassed the field to lead Kathleen Griffith and Belinda Osborne by a slender two strokes. Tracy Kudelka and Rhondelle Ollett are a further two shots adrift on 80.
Stephen Pickering is also joined by fellow Eastern member Craig Cameron for the overnight lead in the men’s nett component after both players returned rounds of 67. The women’s nett sector is headed by Belinda Osborne after signing for a 71 off a handicap of 7.
A fantastic battle beckons when the Championships conclude tomorrow morning at Southern Golf Club with conditions similar to today predicted.
