Day 1 Report: Australian Girls’ Interstate Series

New South Wales jumped to an early lead after the opening two rounds of the Australian Girls Interstate Teams Matches for the Burtta Cheney Cup in Queensland. NSW leads Victoria and Queensland by one contest after winning both their contests on Day 1. As showers came and went over Carbrook Golf Club, NSW defeated Victoria in the morning in a close contest, with three of the five matches going to the 18th hole, and NSW eventually prevailing 3.5 matches to 1.5 matches. The number one match between Cathleen Santoso and Montana Strauss went down to the wire with the pair finishing all square. The other contest in Round 1 between Queensland and South Australia was a one-sided affair, with Queensland starting its title defence with a strong 5-0 victory. On their home track , and with three of their players coming off Top 20 finishes at the Junior Championship two days earlier, it was always going to be tough going for the SA girls. The afternoon contests saw NSW defeat SA 4-1, with Amy Zhou getting SA s point for the contest. In the match between WA and Victoria, Kirsty Hodgkins ensured Victoria got off to an early lead with a hole-in-one on her second hole and ultimately went on to win her match 4&3.
