New South Welshman Aaron Townsend looked to the positives midway through Day 2 of the 2014 Oates Victorian Championship.
Despite slipping down to an overall score of one over par, the 32-year-old was satisfied with his performance.
“I’ve now done two rounds and a lot of people haven’t yet. Looks like it isn’t going to be a nice afternoon (weather wise)” Townsend admitted.
“I don’t think my putting could have been any worse than today and yet I am in a good position so that’s a positive”.
While Townsend was notably disappointed with his short game he was able to land a miraculous flop-shot over the bunker on the 11th hole.
“That’s a shot that I only play when there is no other option and unfortunately in that situation there was no other option” Townsend joyfully reflected.
He continued, “Thankfully it just clambered over and I was able to save a shot there so that was an important part of the round”.
Townsend, 32, played alongside Victorian amateur Andrew Schonewille and Japan’s Takuya Taniguchi.
Meanwhile, drive time radio personality Mark Allen has embarked on back to back successes on Day 2 of the 2014 Oates Victorian Open following his remarkable even par finish yesterday.
“I wasn’t expecting much, I wasn’t trying to hit crazy shots and I knew I wasn’t going to play like Ben Hogan and start aiming at every flag,” Allen told the Herald Sun’s Mark Hayes.
Allen, who is competing in his first pro-tournament in eleven years, also surprised his radio colleague and local golf fanatic, David Schwarz.
“He’s done really well for himself and we’re all getting behind him to make the cut for the weekend” said Schwarz.
A former British Open competitor throughout the 1990s, Allen completed his day down at the Thirteenth Beach Golf Links, returning to the airwaves with co-presenter Schwarz; only to be introduced by the theme tune to the “Rocky” film series.
The two will again broadcast their 1116 SEN radio program from the Oates Victorian Open from 4pm today.
