Matt Kuchar has defeated reigning champion Hunter Mahan 2 and 1 to claim the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, while Australia&aposs Jason Day finished third. Kuchar jumped out to a four-up lead on the front nine to put himself well on the way to his first title since The Players Championship last year but had to survive a late charge from Mahan before wrapping up the victory on the 17th hole. Day defeated 2010 champion Ian Poulter one up in the third-place playoff at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. In the final, Kuchar took the lead when he parred the fourth, while Mahan could only bogey. Kuchar won three of the next four holes, with Mahan bogeying on each occasion, to be four up through eight. But 30-year-old Mahan, who defeated Rory McIlroy to win the Match Play Championship last year, fought back to claim the 10th and 11th holes to give himself some hope of catching Kuchar. A birdie on the 13th gave Kuchar a three-up lead but Mahan won the 14th and 16th holes to keep the pressure on his 34-year-old compatriot. But Mahan could not complete his comeback and he had to concede the 17th hole after his tee shot landed in a bunker and his second stroke ended well off the fairway, eventually giving up after four shots. Earlier, Mahan defeated Poulter 4 and 3 to claim a spot in the final, while Kuchar knocked off Day 4 and 3 in the other semi-final.
