Elite Amateurs set for Golf SA Classic & Rene Erichsen

Elite Amateurs all set for Golf SA Classic & Rene Erichsen Salver MEN&aposS A record field of 102 men will contest the 2013 Golf SA Men’sAmateur Classic and 21 women with compete for the Women’s Rene Erichsen Salver, South Australia s premier Amateur Golf Championships. Played concurrently from Thursday 4 April to Sunday 7 April at Glenelg Golf Club, the events, which have national ranking status, have again attracted a stellar field of local and interstate talent. The Men’sfield features 10 of the top 20 ranked Australian players. Of the 102 men’s entrants, 63 players currently hold handicaps of scratch or better with Daniel Hoeve from Kwinana Golf Club (WA) the lowest marker off an impressive +5.1. WA representative Hoeve who is 7th ranked nationally and 42 in the world, finished tied in second place last year and should feature strongly in 2013. A total of 51 local South Australian players will do battle against 51 interstate visitors made up of 17 players from New South Wales, 13 Victoria, 14 Queensland, 2 Western Australia, 2 Tasmania, 1 ACT, 1 New Caledonia and 1 from Malaysia. Local hopes will rest with Chris Brown from The Grange Golf Club. Brown became the fourth South Australian to with the Classic last year finishing with a final round 5-under par 66 to win at 1-under. SA Medallist Jack Williams (The Grange) will be another contender, along with Heath Riches (Kooyonga), who finished tied for 17th in last year s event after leading after 54 holes. Any local victory will be hard fought however, with Australia s number 3 ranked (59 World) player Nathan Holman (VIC) returning after a 9th place finish last year. National squad Member, Holman has had a stellar 12 months winning ranking events; the Mandurah Open Amateur (WA) and Master of The Amateurs (VIC). NSW representative Jordan Zunic ranked 10 Nationally (135 world), returns to SA having already tasted National Ranking success this year winning the Tasmanian Open finishing at thirteen-under-par for the tournament. Also likely to feature are National Squad Members Geoff Drakeford (VIC) and Ricky Kato (NSW) ranked nationally 6th and 37th respectively. First played in 1985, the Classic has an impressive list of former winners including Brett Ogle (NSW, 1995), Peter O Malley (NSW, 1996), Stuart Appleby (Vic, 1992), Greg Chalmers (WA, 1994) and Brett Rumford (WA, 1996). For the Men&aposs Draw Click here WOMEN&aposS The 2013 Rene Erichsen Salver also boasts a quality line-up, with South Australian players accounting for one-third of this year s field of 21 players. 9 players currently hold handicaps of scratch or better with Grace Lennon from Kingston Heath Golf Club in Victoria, the lowest marker off a remarkable +5.8. Lennon this year s Riversdale Cup Champion is the third ranked female player in Australia and 17 in the World. Strong competition will come from Cathleen Santoso (NSW) who is ranked fifth nationally and 59 in the world. Twice Rene Erichsen Runner Up, Ashley Ona, Ellen Davies-Graham ranked 5 nationally and representative player Nadine White, all from Queensland will also be right in the mix. Last week s SA Amateur Champion Cyna Rodriguez from the Philippines is in hot form and along with compatriot Jayvie Agojo has the game to challenge in big tournaments. State and Australian Amateur Runner up Jenny Lee (Glenelg) and State Captain Caitlin Roberts (Royal Adelaide) are the two locals expected to deliver a strong showing.
