Fox axes the Shark

Greg Norman's stint as lead analyst for Fox Sport's coverage of the US Open proved short-lived. The Shark has been removed by the network just one year into Fox's 12-year deal with the USGA.

First reported over the weekend, Fox confirmed the news today.

"After careful consideration, we have decided to make this change to our USGA Championships coverage," said John Entz, president of production and executive producer for Fox Sports. "We want to thank Greg for his contributions last year, and wish him success in all his current and future endeavors."

The media release quoted Norman as saying: "I put a lot into my role this past year and really enjoyed the time I spent with the commentary team, I have a long history with FOX and wish them well on their journey showcasing USGA Championships. I also want to thank David Hill (former Head of FOX Sports) and the USGA for believing in me and instilling their vote of confidence in me from the outset."

Norman made his US Open debut, taking up the role filled for CBS by Johnny Miller previously, at Chambers Bay last year.

US golf magazines and websites are tipping that he will be replaced by former US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger. reported an unnamed source saying that Norman was too silent, and that he "didn’t do his homework and he didn’t know any players who weren’t Australian''.
