Golf Club Historians meeting – 14 October 2013

Another successful meeting was held at Woodlands GC on Monday 14 October with more than 30 people attending representing 21 different clubs, both metropolitan and regional. Speakers included: Chris McLeod, Club President and Club Historian, who delivered an illustrated presentation on the formation and development of Box Hill which is celebrating its centenary this year. Moira Drew, Golf Australia Archivist spoke about the preservation of golfing documents and memorabilia. Her presentation initiated considerable discussion on ways and means of preserving digital documents, now becoming the preferred means of communication with club members. Golf Society member Cliff George demonstrated various techniques for caring for and restoring hickory clubs. He also provided information on past and present sources of timber used in the manufacture of wooden golf sticks. Paul Burgess presented an illustrated summary of the highlights of Woodlands GC s 100 year history, the Club celebrating their Centenary in 2013. Show and Tell segment: Society member Max Finlay displayed a variety of old sticks and spoke about the history of a selection of them, many not previously shown. New member Marty McGuire, winner of this year s Ken Shepherd Trophy on Hickory Day, produced some samples of his collection for assessment by Max. Tad Woznica of Moe CG, presented a report and extract from a local paper on the opening of the Grampians Golf Club 18 hole course by the Governor of Victoria in 1967, and a program for the Ballarat and District Golf Association for 1963 Tad having been involved with each of these organisations. Both documents will be added to the GSA archivies. Dorothy Mortlock presented copies of Out of the Rough the story of Rosebud Country Club 1962-2013 to Woodlands and The Golf Society of Australia for their respective libraries.
