Golf SA Invitational Team defeat ADF Golf Team

/> SA Invitational Team with the ADFGA side

The Golf SA versus Australian Defence Force (ADF) Match was played on Mon 11th and Tue 12th May at Kooyonga Golf Club with the Golf SA side winning overall 16 matches to 8.

The ADF Golf Team, a Combined Services team (with representatives of the three Services – Army, Navy and Air Force), has been conducting matches against Golf NSW since 1988, Golf Victoria since 1989 and the Australia Seniors Order of Merit Team since 2006.

In 2013 Golf SA was asked to fill the void left by Golf Queensland who played the ADF between 2005 – 2012. In the inaugural year the Golf SA side won 15 matches to 9 and in 2014 the ADF squared the ledger winning 14 matches to 10.

The South Australian team, which is an invitational side Managed and Captained by SA Golf Industry Hall of Fame Member David Cherry, consisted of 12 invited players. There were 4 new players to the team this year; Golf SA Board Member and former state player Josie Hodge, 2014 Mid-Amateur Champion Sudeera Botejue, Golf SA Match Committee member and 2012 Mid-Amateur Champion Patrick Mentzel and State player and Golf SA Community Coach Elysia Yap.

Last year, history was made with the 2013 ADF Ladies Champion, Malina Rumble being the first lady to compete at an ADFGA state event. This year Bronwyn Mullins the 2014 ADFGA National Champion was selected and in turn Golf SA selected for her second series, PGA Professional Sarah Douglass-Norris along with Elysia Yap and Josie Hodge.

Players selected in the SA team (with a handicap up to 6) were commensurate to those selected by ADF who select their team from the previous year 72 hole National Championship, which is held at Federal Golf Club in Canberra each December.

Day 1 & 2 Summary

Day 1 – Mon 11 May 2015 – Fourball & Foursomes Match Play

The morning fourball matches were played in wintery conditions making the magnificent Kooyonga layout a difficult challenge. However all matches were very close, with the morning play ending 3½ v 2½ in favour of SA.

The Golf SA team settled nicely after the lunch break, partnering well to win all 6 foursomes matches. Simon Norris and Sudeera Botejue had the biggest win of the afternoon 7&6.

At the end of the day's play the Golf SA Team led 9½ v 3½ with the final singles round to play on Tuesday.

Day 2 – Tues 12 May 2015 – Singles Match Play

Requiring only 4 of the 12 singles matches for victory, The ADF side competed strongly and after 6 matches, scores were three apiece. SA wins were to Tony Timmins 8&7, David Cherry 5&4 and Chris Claxton 6&5.

The SA side secured the title, when Ramon Thorne won 2up at match number 6.

The top five matches ended 2 ½ each with Patrick Mentzel and Phil Chapman winning for SA and Sudeera Botejue halving his match at number four.

SA therefore claimed the singles 6½ v 5 ½ to defeat the ADFGA Team 16 to 8 overall.

Once again all players competed in the right spirit, with plenty of new friendships formed.

A dinner was held post series in the dining room at Kooyonga with all players attending and representatives from Golf SA, Soldier On and event sponsor RSL Care SA in attendance.

Thank you also to Kooyonga Golf Club for hosting the event and the support they provided throughout.
