The choice is to either carry the fairway bunker forty meters short of the green and run the ball down towards the front edge or to fly the ball all the way onto the putting surface. The latter shot is more risky and the rule is to avoid is missing the green on the side the pin is cut because making a birdie from the deep guarding bunkers is not easy.
