Juniors ever closer to big time

One need look no further back than last week to feel the impact of the Australian Junior Championship.

On one hand there was reigning girls’ champion Celina Yuan, of Sydney, who reached the semi-final of the national amateur titles.

On the other was the announcement that reigning boys’ champ Ryan Ruffels, of Melbourne, was turning pro with starts lined up on the US PGA Tour from next week.

This is the emerging and powerful trend in Australian golf – that the youngsters who are competitive at the national junior titles are well advanced on the pathway to golfing glory.

With that in mind, entries are now open for the 2016 Australian Junior Championships to be played from April 13-15 in northern Tasmania.

The Boys’ Championship will be played at Ulverstone Golf Club and the Girls’ Championship will be played at Devonport Golf Club.

Both events have stellar honour rolls, with past winners including Adam Scott, Jason Day, Wendy Doolan and Jan Stephenson.

With a place in the Australian Open field up for grabs for both winners, there will be plenty of excitement come the final round.

The GA handicap limit for boys is 5.4 and for girls is 15.4.
