Kent retains title in close finish

Defending Champion Greg Kent (Charlestown) held off strong challenges on the final day to win the 2014 NSW Veterans 54 Hole Strokeplay Championships held in Western Sydney. Under sunny skies at the magnificent Stonecutters Ridge Golf Course at Colbee, Kent fired a final round 78 to edge out three-time previous winner, Col Kenning (Kiama) by two strokes. Kent praised the WSRVGA tournament committee for providing “three challenging courses, Richmond, Penrith and Stonecutters Ridge to contest this prestigious Event.” A record field of 120 golfers from across NSW and the ACT contested the Championships, including 45 players on single-figure handicaps. The lowest round scores in the tournament were shot by local Western Sydney players, Laurie Cupples (Leonay) a two under par 70 at Penrith, and Glenn Reynolds (Richmond) a 73 at Penrith. The 54-Hole Nett winners were John Banting (Windsor) 214 strokes off a handicap of eight, and runner-up Chris Collins (Cabramatta), 216 off a handicap of six. Tournament Director Les Knox was delighted with the success of his first Championships. He remarked “we dodged a bullet with the weather, met a wonderful lot of good golfers, and we were all well served by a hard-working group of course teams and Committee officials. We look forward to hosting an even bigger and better Tournament in 2015”. Les thanked the Sponsors for their support: Warren Saunders Insurance Brokers, the Richmond Club, Australand Pty Ltd, Dunn & Farrugia, Penrith Golf Club, Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club. Leading scores
