Glenelg number 1 Jenny Lee in action last week in the Club Championship final

Metropolitan Pennant – Simpson Cup Round 4 summary

The top 3 teams, Grange, Kooyonga and Royal Adelaide all had wins in round 4 of the Metropolitan Pennant season played at The Grange Golf Club, while the big mover was Blackwood who defeated Tea Tree Gully to jump from 7th to 4th on the ladder.

With the contest locked at 2 matches a piece, with McMahon and Thomson winning for the Gullies and Winton and Tobin for Blackwood, Andrew Humphries overpowered Zak Amundson 6&4 to give Blackwood a narrow lead with two matches to come.

At number two, Michael Munn bounced back after last week’s heavy defeat by Andre Na to account for Greg Blewett 3&2 to secure the contest for Blackwood.

Tea Tree Gully skipper, Chris Austin won his match at number one, 2up against Nick Wake but it was all academic as Blackwood claimed the contest 4 – 3 to move to outright 4th.

In the early match of the day Kooyonga secured its third straight win defeating The Stirling 5.5 – 1.5.

Kym Rivett opened the account for The Stirling at number seven, 2 up over Jordan Bishop, however Cocks, Shaw, Riches, Baker and Somerfield were all too strong for their Stirling opponents winning their matches.

The halved match was between Daniel Speirs and former State Amateur Champion Phil Roberts at number 4 who is proving to be a handful for his opponents.

Grange maintained its unbeaten run accounting for Glenelg 4.5 – 2.5.

Former Goodwood Saints footballer Scott Webb, opened the account for Grange defeating Henry Duregon 5&4 before Glenelg hit back winning the next two matches, Leigh Attenborough over Cory Baker and David Hiern against Colin Coleman.

However, Ben Stowe defeated Josh Hayes 3&2 and Matthew Lisk was too good for Connor Chant 3&1 continuing their unbeaten run this season.

At number two Justin Crowder and Matt Overall squared their match keeping Glenelg in the contest however Grange’s number 1, Jack Williams overpowered Glenelg’s first gamer Sam Raschella 4&2, who was thrust into the number 1 position in his first Simpson Cup game after Campbell Rawson failed to take his place due to illness.

Royal Adelaide continued its winning form by defeating Highercombe 4 – 3 and moves to third, with 3 wins for the season. This time last year Royal Adelaide was at the foot of the ladder without a win from 4 matches.

The win over Highercombe was setup early with lower order victories to Nathan Baulderstone and Matt Lawson before Kane Parry defeated Louis Fuller at number 5.

Aaron Southern and Andrei Ezergailis secured the victory for Royal, with wins over Scott Mills and Nick May respectively, despite Mark Deacon and Ben Hallam winning the two top order matches for Highercombe.

Next week’s round five matches are held at Kooyonga with the host side coming up against Tea Tree Gully. The Grange should account for The Stirling and Royal Adelaide must beat Blackwood to stay in the hunt for a top two finish. Glenelg and Higercombe should be an enthralling battle.
