A target has been placed on Cameron Davis’s back as the afternoon field set to the course.
The New South Welshman signed for an 8-under 63 to be on top of the standings as the afternoon wave of players took to The Australian.
An impressive 5-under front nine was the superb start Davis was looking for with his only bogey coming on the par-4 9th hole.
“I am not surprised with the scores that are up there so far. The wind started swirling a bit towards the end and the afternoon guys will definitely have it tougher,” Davis said.
Queenslander Taylor Macdonald posted a tidy 65 to steal outright second place and trail leader Davis by two shots.
One shot further back is headline act Jason Day, his 5-under 66 a solid start in the morning's favourable conditions.
Despite a nasty double bogey on the 8th (his 17th hole of the day), Day believes his game is heading in the right direction.
“I would rate my game today maybe a 7 or 8 out of 10,” Day said.
“I made a couple of errors out there today with my swing but I made eight birdies and finished 5-under which is a very good start to the week.”
