Cardwell celebrate being MyGolf centre of August

Congratulations to our latest MyGolf Centre of the Month, Cardwell Golf Club.

Located north of Townsville in far north Queensland, Cardwell have excelled in running well-structured MyGolf programs since mid-2015.

Since being hit by Cyclone Yasi in 2011, the club has undergone extensive renovations and continues to rebuild to provide social and sporting support to the local community.

This year, the Cardwell Golf Club has again partnered with the local school to offer students the chance to participate in the MyGolf program.

Always boasting high participation figures, Cardwell’s latest MyGolf endeavour well exceeded their previous year’s efforts, this term reaching 85 participants.

“A total of 85 students ranging in age from four to 11 are currently enjoying the opportunity to get involved in golf,” MyGolf co-ordinator Paul Busst said.

”For many of these children it is their first exposure to the game, so it is important that the program is fun-based in addition to offering skill-based exercises,” said Paul.

In order to support an extensive variation in age, the club supplements its MyGolf program with specialty equipment and training tools targeted at younger age groups.

Running once per week and involving 5-6 differing activities, the children cover crucial beginner exercises such as putting, chipping, pitching and full swing.

“A core group of six volunteers take groups of up to six children each through the fun-filled exercises,” Paul said.

“The response from the children has been fantastic. Being a small town, the volunteers involved will often cross paths with the children and their parents outside of school, with very positive feedback received in terms of how much the kids are enjoying the experience.

“The MyGolf program has the potential to play a large part in growing the game of golf in the local community by exposing new people to the game.

“On the back of the partnership with the school, there have been enquiries and interest for after-school clinics to be run so that the children can continue to build on the skills they have already learnt.”

Congratulations once again to Cardwell Golf Club on their extraordinary efforts on introducing local children to the game of golf.

We applaud your passion and dedication to the game.

Keep up the great work!
