Carracher leading the charge at Bannockburn

It was a fresh start this morning for the first round of the Victorian Men’s Sand Greens Championship at Bannockburn GC. Located half an hour west of Geelong city centre, the club has enjoyed a full clubhouse with visitors from all across the state following on from the Women’s Championship earlier this week.

Edward Carracher of Euroa is leading the charge with a 3-over par 72. The 2013 champion’s card included a birdie, two bogeys and a double to be leading by a single shot from Beechworth’s Nathan Schneider on 74. A further shot behind are fellow Beechworth member Dylan Pool and John Owen from Barwon Heads. Ross Murray (Hamilton) and local Garry Ward (Bannockburn) are tied on top of the B-Grade leaderboard with a pair of 80s, while Jamie Ackland of Parkland stands alone in C-Grade with an 86, leading Leonard Waith (Marong) by one shot.

Parklands member Rod Schwarz came in with the best nett score in A-grade with a 2 under nett par 67. Hot on his tail are Darren Armstrong (Bannockburn) and Peter Hallam (Hopetoun) both died on nett 68. B-grade nett sees another tie for first with Robert Ross of Finley and Ward carding two rounds of 69. C-Grade gross joint leader Ackland carded the best nett score of 68, with a trio of players 2 shots back on nett 70.

Multiple players are still in contention to etch their name onto the coveted Sand Greens trophy. Play will kick off from 9am again tomorrow, with the final round promising to be a race to the finish. The weather was kind to the field following the flash floods that hit the western part of the state, and fingers are crossed that tomorrow brings similar conditions to round out the championship.
