Karin Liedke from Kings Cove was victorious at the 2016 Silver Spoon after returning ascore of 34stableford points in the State Final today at Keysborough Golf Club in stereotypical Melbourne weather that featured 4 seasons in the one day.
The event commences with Club Qualifying rounds throughout the year, with winners proceeding to the State Final. This year over 170 Victorian affiliated clubs participated with 115 of them attending today’s final. It started out as a warm day in Melbourne’s South-East with the mercury reaching 26 degrees late in the morning with strong winds also a factor for the players. This quickly changed at the close of the first round, the sun disappearing and drizzly rain and clouds settling in for most of the afternoon.
After starting on the 7th hole, Liedke went on to have a wonderful 21 points on the back 9, adding 13 more to the total on the home stretch to claim the Burtta Cheney Trophy along with a case of 6 spoons. With this score on the last 9, Karin was successful in the 6-way countback that decided the winner for the day.
Dorothea Jacobs (Riverside) made the most of the afternoons weather scooping up 34 points to defeat Virginia Bailey (Mansfield) in a countback.
Keysborough Golf Club, located just off the Eastlink freeway, is to be commended for the manner in which they hosted the State Final. The club’s hospitality and assistance in the lead up to the event is greatly appreciated.
