The first round of the Kooringal Senior Amateur got underway this afternoon in Altona, in perfect golfing weather. 78 players took to the beautiful fairways of the course known as the Sandbelt of the West, but it was a small contingent of locals that got an early jump on their respective fields.

John Owen (Barwon Heads) leads the men’s gross field, a neat even par round of 71 today puts him 1 shot ahead of Ian McCleary (Kooringal) and 3 in front of John Kelly (Metropolitan). Owen is coming off the back of a win at the Surfcoast Senior Amateur and will be looking to capitalise on his overnight lead.

John Sist (Kooringal) leads the men’s nett section, a brilliant 67 nett gives him a 2-shot lead over Brian Gray (Patterson River) and a further 2 shots over Robert Hodson, McCleary (both Kooringal) and Owen (Barwon Heads).

Heather Harley (Kooringal) has taken a commanding lead in the women’s Scratch Stableford field, after posting 26 points around her home course Harley will take an 8 point lead into tomorrows final round. Sue Lush (Gardiners Run) is sitting in second place on 18 points with Helen Drake (Dorset) close behind on 16.

Prezi Care (Kooringal) will take a one shot lead into round 2 after returning 33 Stableford points, Liz Alston (Winchelsea) and Harley are close on her heels however, and with similar weather predicated for tomorrow, the title is anyone’s for the taking.

Round 2 begins tomorrow at 10:00am, players can purchase a bacon and egg roll from 8:45am for $5.
