Maddy stays on American roll

Hinson-Tolchard, 17, played four consistent rounds this week to finish joint runner-up at the IMG World Junior Championship in California.

And capping a great week on the famous Torrey Pines North Course for the Aussies, gregarious South Australian Charley Jacobs also shone to finish in a share of eighth.

On the boys’ side, Perth’s Connor McKinney found a share of third place, just two shots adrift of champion Aidric Jose Chan, of the Philippines.

His fellow West Australian Josh Greer tuned up for the US Boys’ Amateur with a share of 17th, while Newcastle’s Jye Pickin and Canberra’s Adam Thorp (26th and 41st, respectively) combined for fourth overall in the concurrent team event.

Hinson-Tolchard, a member at Gosnells in Perth, was recently the top qualifier at her site for the upcoming US Junior Girls’ championship, having won the Australian equivalent in 2018.

After opening with a 74 at Torrey Pines, she followed up with impressive rounds of 71-69-71 to roar back to three under, just three behind winner Sarunchana Rattanasin, of Thailand.

Hinson-Tolchard will head to Chicago this week for the Women’s Western Amateur before heading to Wisconsin for the junior national championship next week.
