Metro in May

Players and umbrellas were up early this morning as The Metropolitan Golf Club welcomed the finalist in the 2018 School Sport Victoria Senior Secondary Championships. With the range covered, the putting green swamped, and even a few players warming up by the fire, the rain wasn’t going to dampen the spirits of 96 young and eager students. In conjunction with today’s final the 17 & Under SSV Team Vic Selection Trails were run to decide on a school state team to compete at the National Championships later in August.

In the senior girls section it was the familiar face of Piper Stubbs (Rowville SC) at the top of the leader board with an impressive score of three under 71. With no major hiccups and a scorecard that included 5 birdies, Piper continues to show fine form that also had her selected in the recent Victorian Junior State Team. In second place was the 2017 champion Linley Ooi (Melbourne Girls College) with a three over 77, and in third place Lauren Goddard (Maribyrnong College) with a five over 79.

In the boys section the scores were just as impressive and the race even closer. Again, not shy of a good score was the boys overall champion Ryan Thomas (Rowville SC) carding an even par round of 72. Ryan who has only recently moved over from Tasmania but well known amongst the junior ranks pipped Mitchell Crabbe (Geelong HS) at the line with the countback falling his way. A countback was also need to decide third position, with the chocolates going to Noah Best (Warrnambool College) on a one over par score of 73.

To conclude the presentations the 17 & Under SSV State Team was announced with players selected on a combination of scores and Golf Victoria junior rankings. Proving that the depth of talent throughout Victoria is super strong it took a good round today to find yourself in amongst this team. The team selected (6 boys & 6 girls) will represent the state at the National Championships to try and bring home the trophy for Victoria. The 2018 team is listed below;
