The Stuart Appleby Regional Series kicked off in style today at one of Australia's great golf courses, Metropolitan Golf Club, right in the famous Melbourne Sandbelt and hosts of the 2014 Australian Masters. The full field had perfect conditions for scoring but many battled the mercury as the temperatures rose into the low 30’s by the early afternoon.
Harry Goakes continued the momentum from Southern last week and notched up yet another victory in the overall boys gross section. Unlike last week that saw him dominate from start to finish with a scintillating nine under tally, he had stiff completion from Medway’s Li Su today. Both Goakes and Su tied after signing for fantastic rounds of under under-par 71 but Goakes prevailed on a count-back for the top honours. Whilst Su was unquestionably disappointed with the count-back result his nett score in division A was too strong and took home the title with 67 from his 4 handicap.
Meanwhile it was a tight affair in the girls section, after representing Victoria in New Zealand only last week Kai Shipp carded her way to the overall girl’s title with a round of two-over par 76. Shipp notched out Latrobe’s Chae rim Kwak but a mere shot for victory. The Sandhurst member has been impressive with solid rounds across the board as well hoisting the trophy on multiple occasions lately.
Harvey Young made light work of the tee-tree lined layout when the 10 marker signed for a brilliant round of 66 from his 10 handicap to walk away with first place in the B division. Not only was it his first time that he has ever broken 80 off the stick but he did so by four shots – a great feat! Naya Patel from Spring Valley was dominant in the C division with 41 points, followed by Hamish Farquharson on 40 points and Jacob Ngo on 38 points.
