Media centre legend Kathie Shearer is celebrating her 30th Australian Open in Sydney this week.
Shearer has been a popular and respected figure in golf for many years, running the media centre at the Open and other Australian tournaments with her usual mix of humour, strict discipline and efficiency.
She is mildly famous for having told a young Tiger Woods ‘You effing well have to!’’ at the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1998 when Woods, in his infancy as a pro, declined to attend a media conference.
Kathie has been a wonderful supporter of the media and an advocate for their rights as well as being a superb person.
She has never lost her enthusiasm for the job. “I still love it,” she said.
