Stage set for 2017 Mazda Victorian Four-Ball Championship

The 2017 Mazda Victorian Four-Ball Championship tees off on Sunday 8 January with the first country qualifying round to be played at Wangaratta Golf Club, followed by the first city round at Commonwealth Golf Club on Monday 9 January.

The start of this year’s event marks the third consecutive year Mazda Victoria has been naming rights partner after previous involvement from its inception in 1997 until 2004. As Golf Victoria’s highest participation event, the Mazda Victorian Four-Ball has enjoyed steady growth over the past few years with player numbers set to exceed 2,000 in 2017.

One of the big additions Mazda has brought to the event since 2015 is putting up for grabs a brand new Mazda for any participant who records a hole-in-one on the designated par 3 at all venues during the championship. In 2015, two cars went off to participants who had the ace of their lives. Anyone who has a hole-in-one on the designated par 3 in 2017 at any venue will be driving home in a brand new Mazda3 Maxx!

Four new venues will host qualifying events in this year’s championship. For the city qualifiers, Northern and Southern Golf Clubs will host events, whilst Rich River and Hill Top will join the list of country qualifying venues.

Golf Victoria Chief Operating Officer, David Greenhill is thrilled with the progress of the Championship on the eve of the 2017 event. “It’s been 20 years since the event was first introduced as a State title which all Victorian club golfers could aspire to,” Greenhill stated.

“To now see over 1,000 men’s, women’s and mixed pairs competing in 23 qualifying rounds in all parts of Victoria is particularly gratifying. The spirit that is then seen amongst the 100 pairs that move forward to reach the 36-hole final at Sorrento and The National is special too. It’s what golf is all about really – players from everywhere playing on great courses and enjoying themselves.

“Special thanks has to be given to Mazda Victoria for sponsoring the Championship for much of the 20 years. The company was there in 1997 and is still supporting the event today. There’s no doubt that Mazda has left an indelible mark on Victorian golf through Golf Victoria’s flagship participation event.”

The Mazda Victorian Four-Ball Championship will be played from 8 January through to 10 March with the State final to be played on 20 and 21 March at Sorrento Golf Club and The National Golf Club (Cape Schanck) respectively.
