It was a putting lesson from his coach on Thursday that inspired Jarrod Stirling to victory in the NSW Open Regional Qualifying tournament at Moree Golf Club today.
“I was struggling a bit, and after a talk with my coach, Wayne Perske, everything seemed to click.”
The 20-year-old reeled off four birdies in a row on Saturday to kick start his impressive 5-under-par first round. He followed it up with another birdie run in much tougher conditions yesterday to book his spot in next week’s Open with an impressive 36 hole total of 4-under-par 140.
Stirling, who works at Golf Central in Brisbane, was thrilled with his weekend’s effort and is feeling buoyed by the result going into Friday's Federal Amateur and the NSW Open the following week.
“It is great to be playing well going into the next few tournaments,” Stirling said. ”I am looking forward to seeing if I can match it with the blokes I play with over the next few weeks.
“I hope to get to the PGA Tour one day,” he said.
Qualification for the NSW Open is the Yarra Yarra and Redcliffe member’s biggest result to date.
“I qualified for the Queensland Open last year, and I played in China when I was 16, but this is a pro tournament, nothing as big as this."
