After terrible weather yesterday at Keysborough, players had little relief this morning in the second instalment of the Stuart Appleby Regional Series at Woodlands Golf Club. Initially the dark rain clouds rolled in soon after hit off and dampened the players the first half of their round before a beautiful sunshine swept across the fairways late in the piece.
Jack Deftereos-Brennan used all of his local knowledge around the renowned Melbourne Sandbelt course to card a brilliant round of one under-par 70. The scratch marker captured victory in the overall boy’s title with relatively steady golf all morning after returning 12 pars, 3 birdies and 3 bogies. Deftereos-Brennan has found some solid form of late after also walking home with the Peninsula Junior Masters title last week.
Harrison Whykes was also notable after finishing a single stroke in arrears of Deftereos-Brennan and in outright second place.
Kai Shipp blitzed the field in the overall girls section after the Sandhurst member signed for a round of two over-par 75 to take out her inaugural Regional Series title in challenging conditions. 11 year old young gun Jeneath Wong was next best in the girls field on a score of 80.
Settlers Run’s Jack Harrison set the course on fire today with a fantastic score of 68 from his 8 handicap to win A division by a mere shot from Kyle Novacek. Jade Brooks was too strong in the B division when the Waverley member recorded a round of 69, four strokes better than her 12 handicap. Brooks will also have her name etched on the prestigious Liz Bruton salver after returning the best girls handicap score across the entire field.
In C division it was Jacob White that claimed the top prize and the Perc Morling trophy with a massive 43 stableford points. White, a member of Howlong, had his revenge today after he was edged out for top honours a countback yesterday.
The finale to the Stuart Appleby Regional Series will be played at Sandhurst Golf Club on Sunday 21 August where the Series winners for 2016 will be announced. The overall Regional Series champion will receive a paid trip to the “Jack Newton Srixon International” as a Golf Victoria representative in October.
