The President, Board and Staff of Golf Australia express their deepest sympathy at the passing of much loved and respected former Victorian Golf Association (VGA) Council Member, Mr. John Scrivener, aged 86 years.
A member of the Eastern Golf Club for 47 years including serving as a former Club President and a member at Commonwealth Golf Club since 1982, John was elected to the VGA Council in 1989 and served for 20 years. He made an outstanding contribution to Victorian Golf over that time particularly in the Association’s Match program; senior golf events; junior golf events and development activities; Victorian Open; finance; rules of golf; handicapping and course rating including the role of Rules Chairman from 2005 to 2009.
John was a much recognized, respected and appreciated figure at VGA events and through the conduct of countless rules education seminars and course ratings in all parts of the State.
He was also a member of the VGA’s Selection Committee from 1998 – 2000 which included the management of Victorian Colts and Junior Teams. He retired from the VGA Council at the 2009 Annual Meeting but continued to be active in Victorian golf as a USGA accredited course rater and a State Referee at both Australian and Victorian events.
Golf Australia’s sincere condolences are extended to the Scrivener family at this time. John was a thorough gentleman with a passion for golf, a friend to all and will be sadly missed.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Le Pine Chapel, 1603 Dandenong Road, Oakleigh on Wednesday 29 May commencing at 10am.
