Vilips runner-up in Texas

Rising Australian star Karl Vilips has finished runner-up in a big amateur tournament in Texas.

Vilips, 17, who won a gold medal for Australia at the Youth Olympics last year, lost a playoff in the AJGA Simplify Boys Championship.

Melbourne's Vilips, who is schooling in the US on his way to a scholarship at Stanford University, eagled the 17th hole at Carlton Woods and lipped out for birdie at the 18th to reach the playoff with Jackson Van Paris, who birdied the second playoff hole against the Australian's par to win the title.

The tournament has previously been won by Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods, David Duval, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth.

Vilips returns to Australia next month to compete in the South Australian amateur.
