When Queenslander Justin Shine nailed a final hole birdie to take himself to eight-under, he also nailed himself a spot in next year&aposs MFS Australian Open as inagural Champion of the MFS Australian Mid Amateur Championship. Prior to playing the final hole, Shine trailed by a stroke to Matthew Oldham who was playing in the final group. Under immense pressure, the Queenslander sunk a 20-foot putt to give himself a share of the lead and watched as Oldham bogeyed the 18th to hand Shine the title. The final round it was a tight contest between Shine, Oldham and John Beveridge who finished third with a total score of six-under. With four holes to play, all three were deadlocked at seven-under. But the Queenslander&aposs ability to shine under pressure got him over the line and an exemption into next year&aposs MFS Australian Open. Today&aposs warm but comfortable conditions at The National Golf Club were a stark contrast to the intense heat that was experienced yesterday and players took advantage of it. Oldham shot a solid 71 but was upstaged by fellow Victorian Perry who shot his second consecutive 68 to lead going into the final day. The day s highlight was however provided by Victorian Ian Frost, who struck a centimetre perfect six-iron off the 11th tee to record a hole-in-one. Frost started the back nine with two consecutive eagles followed by two consecutive birgies but cooled off to register a final score of 71, one-under the card. Chasing Oldham and Perry in tomorrow s final round is Victorian John Beveridge and Graham Bannister of NSW. National Golf Club Champion Andrew Davis isn t far off their pace either, but must improve on his round of 68 this morning. The final day s play begins at 8am Thursday (AEDT) with the champion, who gains an exemption into the 2007 MFS Australian Open, expected to be known by approximately 3pm.
