Applications are now open for the 2011 Golf Australia Rookie Program.

The Rookie Program offers a way of assisting fledgling professional golfers as they enter the most exciting and challenging time in their development; finding and establishing themselves on an international Tour.

The Program has been expanded to allow a number of young professionals to receive the levels of support that have previously been unachievable.

Each scholarship is offered for a period of one year with a review after six months. As the scholarship holder can be part of the program until their fourth year of professional golf, it is theoretically possible for an athlete to be a scholarship holder for four years.

It is expected that the athletes make themselves available to play in state and national PGA and ALPG events.

This would be contingent on the events not conflicting with the player competing in an overseas Tour School. This commitment to Australian events will strengthen the fields for our tournaments and help ensure a high level of media and public interest in our tournaments.

The Rookie Program will see a number of athletes selected. These will be a combination of male and female professionals with no stipulation on the number of male or female golfers.

The definition of an rookie program professional includes any player in the final six months of their amateur golf until the end of their fourth year of professional golf.

In the first year of the program all applicants will either have or gain a Tour card, thus enabling them to compete on a Tour during the year.
