2012 Masters: From here to Augusta

For Golf Australia National Squad member Bryden Macpherson, next week marks an early high point for any player, let alone an amateur and that&aposs on top of winning the British Amateur Championship. The wait for Augusta has been a long one. Macpherson earned his Masters Invitation last June when he won the 116th Amateur Championship, at Hillside Golf Club in England s north west. The then 20-year-old defeated Scotland s Michael Stewart 3&2 to book his place at this year s Masters Tournament and in winning the Amateur, ended a 57 year Australian drought in the tournament going back to Doug Bachli s win in 1954. Macpherson is one of six amateurs in the Masters field, joining Americans Patrick Cantlay, Kelly Kraft, Randal Lewis, Corbin Mills and Asian Amateur champion Hideki Matsuyama from Japan. The Peninsula Country Golf Club member is not unfamiliar with the famed layout. Macpherson spent time studying and playing golf at the University of Georgia over the last 18 months and returned to Augusta last week to begin his on-site preparations. Macpherson s early amateur career also generated plenty of success. Following his win at the Dunes Medal in 2008, he became the first player since Lucas Parsons to win both the Australian and New Zealand Stroke Play titles in the same year in 2009. A year later, Macpherson was selected to represent Australia at the World Amateur Team Championships in Argentina.
