2013 Premiers – Kooyonga Kooyonga has won its 32nd Simpson Cup title and first since 2006, after defeating The Grange 5 matches to 2 in a gripping final played at Glenelg Golf Club, which despite the weather was presented in outstanding condition. In cool and cloudy conditions, with patches of rain throughout the day, Kooyonga s depth proved too strong, with the experienced Heath Riches and talented Zak Fuller, joining the team who finished runner up last season. Fuller claimed Kooyonga s first match at number six, winning 7&6 against former Tea Tree Gully team mate Rudi DuPlooy, before Justin Crowder hit back for The Grange winning at number seven over Kooyonga Club Champion Jordan Bishop 2&1. Kooyonga then claimed match four, with Daniel Speirs accounting for Matthew Lisk 4&2 and match two courtesy of Tim Baker defeating Jack Williams 5&4. For The Grange, Anthony Murdaca pegged one back proving too strong for Heath Riches 3&2 leaving the contest placed 3 – 2 in Kooyonga s favour. After Will Somerfield and Nick Cheary had teed off down the 18th, word came through a few holes behind that Kooyonga s number one Charles Shaw had defeated Chris Brown 4&3 to secure the fourth match and Simpson Cup for Kooyonga. While the overall contest had been decided, Somerfield and Cheary, surrounded by a large gallery, proceeded down the 18th. To the delight of the Kooyonga faithful, Somerfield proved too steady, despite the driving rain, winning 1up, to secure a 5 – 2 victory.
