The Victorian Four-Ball Championship commenced in 1996 in response to a desire to create more State level events for club golfers, regardless of their geographic location, age or handicap level.
The format for the event is a great opportunity for friends, club mates, family members, or work colleagues to join together as partners to compete for a State Amateur Golf Title.
The Championship culminates with a 36-hole final in late March for 100 pairs of men and women golfers that qualify at one of the 17 regional qualifying rounds. This year the final will be held at Sorrento Golf Club and The National Golf Club on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 March.
The first qualifying round teed off today at Spring Valley Golf Club in blustery, winter-like conditions with the temperature peaking at a mere 15 degrees Celsius. 37 pairs competed, with 4 men’s pairs and 1 women’s pair qualifying for the state final. Michael Aisenberg (Cranbourne, h’cap 26) and partner Louis Stuk (The National, h’cap 20) lead the men’s field with a solid score of 44 points. Camberwell pair William Strangwick and Ron Sprague secured 2nd place with a score of 43. Closely following was Antonio Auciello (RAAF Williams) and Mario Auciello (Sanctuary Lakes) winning on a count-back on 43 points for third place over Keysborough pair Greg Newham and Mal Dalley.
The women’s field was tightly contested with Cheltenham pair Fiona Cochrane (h’cap 27) and Kate Large (h’cap 31) qualifying for the final with a fantastic score of 43 points, winning on a count-back from Julia McCammon (The Heritage) and Susan Staddon (Riversdale).
The next qualifying rounds will be at Keysborough GC on Friday 10 January, and Benalla GC on Sunday 12 January. Please note that entries are still open for all city and country venues (excluding Kingston Heath, Woodlands, and Portsea), and that pairs may compete in more than one country qualifying event.
