Tuesday 20 May 2014

Damien Jordan (Coolangatta/Tweed Heads) has come out the victor in the 2014 Men’s NSW Mid Amateur Championship today at Mudgee Golf Club. Damien made a late run in the last four holes to come from behind to win the Championship narrowly from John McMiles (Liverpool) posting a total of 216 for the 54 holes while McMiles came in with 217. In third place was the overnight leader, Josh Campbell (Mudgee) who had a 54-hole total of 218 and was ecstatic to place as well as he did. There were many Mudgee locals out today to support Campbell and although their local favourite didn’t quite get over the line, they certainly saw some great golf. McMiles posted the best round of the tournament today with a two-under-par 69 and was the only person to break 70 throughout the Championship. Congratulations to Damien and all the other prize winners for their enthusiasm during the event.

Today has seen the conclusion of the 2014 Women's NSW Mid Amateur Championship and Round 2 of the Men's NSW Mid Amateur Championship. Overnight leader Gemma Dooley (Moore Park/NSW) has taken out the title for her second year in a row. She fired a great score of 76 today to win the Championship by a massive ten shots. Karen Lasky (The Lakes) had consistent rounds of 83-83 to take out the runner up trophy on a countback from Sharon Nott (Dunedoo). In the nett competition, Louise Stevenson (Killara) has had a total score of 155 to beat Karen Burton (Gold Creek) who was runner up on a countback.

In the Men's Championship, James Ponder (Cromer) has posted the round of the tournament to put himself a shot behind the leader going into the second round. Ponder had five birdies today to shoot an even par 71 to go with his first round 75 which puts him a shot behind local favourite Josh Campbell (Mudgee). Campbell has had consistent rounds of 73-72 to put himself in the lead. Also only a shot behind is Damien Jordan (Coolangatta/Tweed Heads). It looks to be a tight finish tomorrow for the men with 11 guys being within six shots of the lead. Tomorrow the men will play in a seeded draw with the top seeds teeing off the first hole at 9.20am.

Round 1 of the 2014 NSW Mid Amateur Championships has been completed today at Mudgee Golf Club with some interesting results.

In the Men's Championship, Lester Peterson (Bardwell Valley) and Damien Jordan (Coolangatta/Tweed Heads) have both posted a great first round score of one-over-par 72 to take the lead by one shot from Mudgee local Joshua Campbell. A shot further with a score of 74 was the duo of Ryan Edwards (Shelly Beach) and Rod McDonald (Castle Hill). It's setting up to be a close fought Championship with around 20 players being within five shots of the lead with two rounds to play.

In the Women's Championship, defending champion Gemma Dooley (NSW) has taken a slim first round lead with a score of 80 from the pairing of Sharon Nott (Dunedoo) and Alison Gatland (Monash) who were both able to post a competitive round of 81 off the stick. Karen Lasky (The Lakes) also shot a respectable round of 83, with the top-5 being rounded out by the trio of Maree Breen (Shortland Waters), Louise Stevenson (Killara) and Julie Swanson (Pacific Dunes).

Play will commence again at 8.00am with the women leading out the field in a seeded draw. Dooley, Nott and Gatland will all be playing in the same group so it will make for a closely fought final round.
