Since its introduction in 1990, the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) Golf Program has provided the State’s leading young amateur and professional golfers with the highest quality golf coaching; sports science; vocational support and provision of state, national and international competition opportunities to help the athletes achieve their potential and become successful world class players.
The VIS Golf Program also offers a wide range of educational opportunities and support through the ACE program or in liaison with a number of Victoria’s world class universities.
Golf Victoria fully supports the program in partnership with Golf Australia and the Professional Golfers Association. The organisation believes that selection in the program should be the primary goal for aspiring young male and female amateur and professional golfers.
A screening process assessing levels of sport-specific competency is used to design an individualised training program that meets the individual needs of the athlete. As athletes mature, they are encouraged to become more involved in both the assessment of their games and the design of their training programs in preparation for careers as elite athletes on an International Tour.
Throughout their scholarship, athletes are encouraged to pursue work or study commitments to complement their training schedules. Home coaches are actively involved in the development of athletes and have the opportunity to exchange information with VIS coaches and support staff via home coach days, run at intervals throughout the year.
