Ace day for some school golf

Players were all smiles as they arrived at Gardiners Run Golf Course yesterday for the School Sport Victoria Junior Secondary State Final. All 80 of yesterday’s players had made the final through local division events and they all wanted to take home their respective championship titles. As Golf Victoria and School Sport Victoria continue to provide secondary school students with a range of playing opportunities it was great to see the 2016 season finish on the highest of notes.

In the girls section Nasya Sohail (Al-Taqwa College) was able to hold up the trophy finishing just one shot ahead of Piper Stubbs (Rowville SC). Nasya’s round of 74 was set up with a stellar front nine of 1 under par 35, almost a mirror image of Piper Stubbs’ front nine of 36, which proved to be the deciding shot in determining the champion. Jade Brooks (Rowville SC) was able to take out sole third place in the girls section with a score of 79, and Yiling Ooi (Melbourne Girls College) took home the nett prize in a countback to Courtney Henderson (Parkdale SC), both carding fantastic scores of 68.

In the boys section Jasper Stubbs (Rowville SC) was too strong in a field that included a plethora of young and upcoming stars. Jasper’s card returned to the clubhouse in the first group and his score of 5 under 67 went straight to the top of the leader board. With a few of the other players challenging his fantastic score it was always going to take something special for anyone to topple Jasper from his position. Blair Christie (Echuca College) and Will MacKenzie (Emmanuel College) got close to Jasper’s winning score, however both just falling 2 shots shy with equally as impressive rounds of 3 under 69. The round of the day however went to Joe MacKenzie (Maribyrnong College) who destroyed his handicap shooting a nett score of 61 off a handicap of 10, taking home the boys handicap prize.

In a day that included so many good scores and brilliant golfing stories, the day was topped with not 1 but 2 holes in one, both amazingly occurring within the space of about 20mins. Lachlan Stewart (Warracknabeal SC) holed out on the 11th hole and Chris McMahon (Oberon HS) matched with one of his own on the 3rd hole.
