The ACT Schools Golf Team returned from the national championships in Victoria with a bag of results.
The 36-hole stroke event was held at Thirteenth Beach Golf Club. The course had narrow fairways surrounded by a large number of fairway and greenside bunkers and undulating greens, ensuring the students hit thoughtful and accurate shots from tee to green.
Joshua Armstrong took out the School Sport Australia Boy’s Championship in an exciting four way playoff hitting a sensational approach shot to set up an easy tap in birdie for the win on the first hole. Jakub Gancarz missed the playoff by a shot. Grace Hallinan and Chloe Thornton were the best placed ACT girls, both tied for 13th position. Harry Bolton won the boys individual nett score and Jakub Gancarz finished in third place.
As a team, the boys and girls finished fourth and fifth respectively in the teams stroke event. Both teams finished in fifth position in the match play championship. The boy’s highlight of the match play championship was squaring South Australia, who were tough opponents. The girls highlight was squaring their match against Western Australia, a big improvement by all girls from 2012.
The team were excellent ambassadors for their families, schools, clubs and School Sport ACT and demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship. It was noted by convenors and spectators how well the ACT team conducted themselves on the golf course.
James Correll and Mackenzie Rice were the captains of the boys and girls teams respectively, and displayed fantastic leadership skills over the week. Congratulations to all members of the team.
