Albinski birdies way to Round 1 lead

Australian Men&aposs Senior Amateur – Results Round 1 Australian Men&aposs Senior Amateur – Team Results Three birdies were enough to give 2008 champion Stefan Albinski (NSW) the first round lead at the Australian Men’sSenior Amateur Championship at Royal Canberra Golf Club. Albinski, the current Western Australian, Queensland and Tasmanian Senior Amateur champion made the most of the morning conditions to fire a bogey free round of 69 to take a one stroke lead into the second day. Victorian Chris Tatt, who was 4-under par through the front nine, finished with a 2-under par 70 and sits in second place, one stroke ahead of Roy Vandersluis (NSW) who finished with a 1-under par 71. Royal Canberra member Ross Bain used his knowledge of the host course to finish with an even par 72 and sits in fourth place. American Kemp Richardson, a former US and British Senior Amateur champion, fired a 1-over par 73. Richardson is in fifth place going into the second round. Robert Still (ACT) and Ian McPherson (WA) share sixth place after both posted 2-over par rounds of 74. Six players are tied at 3-over par 75 including ACT locals Bill Banks and Rod Boyd. Defending champion Rodney Barltrop (NZ) left himself with plenty of work to do on Thursday to recover from his opening round 83. But for a double bogey on the final hole, 74 year old Geoff Everett (NSW) would have fired his age but had to settle for a 76. Three time champion Tony Gresham (NSW) opened with a 5-over par 77. Royal Canberra Golf Club last hosted the Australian Men’sSenior Amateur Championship 1987. Players must be 55 years and over to be eligible for the Championship.
