Allan fires in Arizona

Former Australian Open champion Steve Allan followed his opening 67 with a second-round seven-under 63 to rocket up the leaderboard at the Frys.com Open in Scottsdale, Arizona. Allan&aposs round, punctuated by just 25 putts as he rolled in eight birdies after a bogey on the first hole, saw him move up to second place overall at 10-under, just one shot behind American leader Arron Oberholser who fired a six-under 64. “That is good. I don&apost do that very often, so that was nice,” Allan said of his putting. “I had a chip-in early on, which helps those putting stats, but the way the greens are, they&aposre quite quick, so you have a lot of those mid-range little par putts, three- and four-footers, and I made them all today.” Allan wasn&apost the only Australian in hot form in Friday&aposs second round, with Mathew Goggin also shooting a 63 to soar from a tie for 44th at the start of the day into a share of fifth spot. Americans Brad Elder and George McNeill also equalled the 63s shot by the two Aussies and sit in a tie for third on nine-under. After a slow start to the year, Allan has been in good touch on the PGA Tour&aposs Fall Series with two top-four finishes and a tie for 19th at the Texas Open. He is currently 139th on the Tour&aposs money list and with a high finish here will certainly jump into the top 125. “Yeah, I&aposm playing well. It&aposs nice to be playing well. There&aposs a lot on the line at this time of year, and I&aposm really trying hard not to think about it and just enjoy the fact that I&aposm hitting the ball good,” Allan said. The highest-placed European is Sweden&aposs Mathias Gronberg on seven-under alongside another Australia, veteran Steve Elkington, and Americans Sean O&aposHair, Kevin Sutherland and Billy Mayfair. Of the other Australians in the field, Mark Hensby (66) and Michael Sim (63) are also in contention at five-under, while Aaron Baddeley is at three-under. Peter Lonard (70) is right on the projected cut line of one-under, although 28-year-old Matt Jones will be disappointed after dropping a shot on the 18th to fall back to even-par.
