Allenby falls short

It was a case of so near yet so far for Robert Allenby once again on the PGA Tour as he finished two strokes behind Ryan Palmer at the Ginn sur Mer Classic in Florida. The Australian, who has not won a title in seven years on the US tour, had an opportunity to take the outright lead on the last hole but could only watch on as his approach shot found the bunker at the back of the green. The result meant Allenby – who came second to Dustin Johnson at Turning Stone a month ago – finished with a bogey six on the hole, a one-under 71 for the day and five-under overall. A birdie would have seen him into a playoff with Palmer. Instead, Palmer hit his own birdie on the 18th to edge clear of a group of five players and seal the US$828,000 first prize and a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. Earlier, it looked like Palmer was coming apart near the middle of his round. He called a penalty on himself and made bogey at No.10 and then double-bogeyed No.11 after pulling his shot into the water. Michael Letzig entered the day with the lead but came to the 18th hole needing a birdie to tie Palmer for the lead. Letzig had a wedge in his hand from 79 yards, but he hit it short and it rolled back to 35 feet and he failed to make birdie. Letzig finished tied for second with George McNeill, Nicholas Thompson, Ken Duke and Vaughn Taylor. Allenby was level with Troy Matteson, Brian Gay, Tom Scherrer and John Huston. Fellow Australian Peter Lonard was a shot further back at four-under, while Nick O&aposHern and Michael Sim were at three-under.
