Allenby still in the hunt

Sportal Robert Allenby has had another good day out shooting 70 in the second round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in California. His round of two-under places him in equal second behind Scott Verplank and Justin Rose. Meanwhile, John Senden played superb golf as he shot an eight-under to put himself in contention after a disappointing first round. The Queenslander followed his one-over with a birdie blitz to card a 64. After recording a modest three-under through 12 holes, Senden opened fire to record five birdies in the remaining six holes and post what was the lowest tournament score of the day. Co-leader Rose had a day of fluctuating fortune when he bogeyed the third but eagled the fifth. A run of five birdies in seven holes rocketed him up the leader board with the Englishman managing to find the hole from bunkers at five and 12. Verplank started the day one stroke ahead of Rose and would have stayed there if not for finding the water on the final hole. His round included seven birdies to give him a share of the lead, one ahead of Allenby going into the third round. Meanwhile, Australian Nathan Green backed up his solid first round with a four-under 68 and Stephen Leaney blasted a five-under 67 to be minus four through two rounds. After an even par first round, Peter Lonard played well to go three-under after two, as did Paul Gow who dropped off the pace after an opening round 68. Phil Mickelson, who is playing his first event of the new season, shot a second consecutive two-under and defending champion Chad Campbell was disappointing with a 74 to leave him 12 adrift of the lead.
