Recently crowned British Amateur champion Bryden Macpherson has joined Golf Australia s National Squad at Tier 1 level. Macpherson defeated Scotland s Michael Stewart 3&2 at Hillside Golf Club in England s in mid June to become the first Australian winner of The Amateur Championship since Doug Bachli in 1954. The victory secured his start in this year s Open Championship at Royal St George s and an invitation to the 2012 Masters Tournament at Augusta National. Macpherson, a Peninsula Country Golf Club member, is also a former Srixon Australian Stroke Play and New Zealand Stroke Play champion and was a member of the National Squad in 2009 and 2010. He recently completed his sophomore year at the University of Georgia where he has been playing college golf. Golf Australia High Performance Director Brad James said Macpherson s performance in England was particularly impressive. For it to have been more than 50 years since an Australian last won the title made an already excellent result even better, James said. Bryden was up against the best amateur players in the world on the links at Hillside and prevailed. We wish him all the best for The Open Championship and look forward to working with him in the months to come and leading into the 2012 Masters Tournament.
