Decision Book Answers
1. Decision 19-2/2. The player incurs a penalty of one stroke (Rule 19-2) and, since the ball lies out of bounds, must proceed under Rule 27-1, incurring another penalty stroke.
2. Decision 16-1a/8. Yes, provided the player did not press anything down.
3. Decision 27/10. Since neither player could identify a ball as their ball, both balls were lost – see Definition of Lost Ball. This incident underlines the advisability of the player putting an identification mark on their ball – see Rules 6-5 and 12-2.
4. Decision 11-3/1. When the player made a stroke at the ball, it was in play and Rule 11-3 no longer applied. As the player caused the ball in play to move when addressing it, the player incurred a penalty stroke and was obliged to replace the ball (Rule 18-2).
5. Decision 11-2/1. Yes
6. Decision 11-2/2 (e). No penalty and the tee-marker should be replaced.
7. Decision 5-3/5. Yes, see Note 2 to Rule 5-3. The same ruling would apply if the lie of a ball in a hazard is altered when the ball is lifted for identification (see the Note to Rule 12-2).
8. Decision 27-1/2. Yes. When the player put the substituted ball into play at the spot of the previous stroke with the intent to play a ball under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 27-1), the original ball was lost (see Definition of “Lost Ball”). Therefore, Rule 20-6 does not apply, and he must continue with the substituted ball.
9. Decision 24-2. Any part of such an angled support or guy wire which is in bounds is an obstruction.
10. Decision 23/5. Yes. An ant hill is a cast or heap made by an insect. A player is entitled to remove an ant hill under Rule 23-1.
