Stuart Appleby holds a narrow one-shot lead over Tiger Woods and Justin Rose after round three of the US Masters, following another dramatic day at Augusta. Appleby looked set to break par for the second consecutive round deep into the back nine but a triple-bogey on the 17th followed by a par at 18 saw the Australian card a one-over-par 73 to lead the field on two-over. It had been a good morning for Appleby though, as he struck a hat-trick of birdies from the second hole to charge into contention. Having scored rounds of 73 and 74, Woods improved slightly to take par on day three, moving the four-time US Masters winner into a tie for second alongside first-round leader Rose (75). Woods began impressively, knocking in birdies on the eighth and 13th on his way to a 34 going out, but he struggled to maintain that pace on the back nine as he bogeyed the final two holes to leave Appleby ahead of the field. Rose, though, continued his consistent tournament as the Brit carded his second consecutive 75 to enjoy an overall three-over score that was set up by a brilliant 69 on day one. Geoff Ogilvy, the best-placed Australian after round two, could not maintain his form as he endured a horror day, scoring a nine-over-par 81 to slip 18 places into a tie for 26th alongside compatriot Rod Pampling. Pampling may have just made the cut by one stroke but he has continued his quiet improvement throughout the tournament so far, carding 74 to climb 20 places up the leaderboard. After an even-par round on day two, Aaron Baddeley (76) could not maintain that form and dropped four strokes while Adam Scott also shot a 76. The best performance of the day though, came from Retief Goosen who carded a 70 to be the only player to break par as Masters&apos debutant Brett Wetterich eventually dropped off the pace with an 83, dropping from first place on the leaderboard into a tie for 23rd.
