Ariya’s record run knocks Minjee down a rung

Ariya Jutanurgarn’s extraordinary run on the LPGA Tour continued this morning with her record third consecutive victory.

The Thai 20-year-old, a pro for four years but winless on the LPGA Tour until this month, was almost flawlessin a closing five-under-par 67 to ensure a commanding five-shot victory in the Volvik Championship in Michigan.

Western Australia’s Minjee Lee closed with a 74 to fall into a tie for 20th and was overtaken by Jutanurgarn on the world rankings with the Thai leaping into a career-high 10th, knocking the Aussie down to 13th.

Queenslander Sarah Jane Smith continued her good recent run with a closing 72 to finish T48, while Sarah Kemp, of New South Wales, finished T60 after a final-round 74.

Victorian Su Oh fired a second-round 70, but couldn’t quite overcome the damage of her opening 77 and missed the cut by a stroke.

Since three straight late bogeys cost her a chance of victory at the year’s first major, the ANA Inspiration, Jutanurgarn has been spectacular with her result sequence reading 4-T15-T19-6-1-1-1 since the end of March.
