New South Wales duo Josh Armstrong (The Lakes) and Grace Kim (Avondale) have won their respective 2016 Greg Norman Junior Masters titles following the final round of the 72-hole Championship at Palmer Colonial today.
The 2016 Greg Norman Junior Masters is the final event on this year’s calendar and features the best field of any junior event in Queensland. Players from every district and state, as well as numerous countries converged on the Palmer Colonial and Palmer Gold Coast courses to contest the titles.
In perfect scoring conditions, the Golf NSW High Performance Squad member sealed the boy’s championship with a final three-under 69 round for a 72-hole total of four-under 282 to win by eight-strokes from Joel Stahlhut (Goondwindi). Armstrong entered the week in prime form after claiming second at the Aaron Baddeley International Junior Championship in San Diego last week. Lochlan Coleborn (Mt Coolum) finished a further shot back on 291 for third, also celebrating his 18th birthday during the final round.
The girl’s championship was also won by another New South Welshman Grace Kim of Avondale Golf Club. After several close shaves, the 15 year took out her first maiden win with a 72-hole total of five-over 293 to clasp victory by one-shot over Min Kweon (Sanctuary Cove).
Overnight 17 years & under leader Lisa Edgar (Surfers Paradise) battled it out with good friend Darcy Habgood (Toowoomba) on the final hole to take out the title with a par, securing her a one-shot win for a 72-hole total of 297. Junior State team member Coleborn claimed the boys 17 years & under division with fellow state member Jed Morgan (Hattonvale) one-shot adrift on 292.
Karen Kim (RACV Royal Pines) won the 15 years & under girls division carding consistent rounds of 79-76-78-71 for a 72-hole total of 304, and a five-shot advantage over Hannah Reeves (Hills). Fellow Hills member Rugthai Thomgsom secured the boys division on a countback from QAS squad member Louis Dobbelaar (Brookwater) carding a tournament total of 300.
The 13 years & under division was won by Yin Kanpai (Hills) and Kaito Chiu (Oxley) with 72-hole scores of 298 and 303 respectively.
There was plenty of hot scoring for the week including a brilliant nine-under 63 from Virginia’s Zach Maxwell in the final round.
The winners also receive tournament exemptions with Josh receiving a start in the 2017 Isuzu Queensland Open and Grace at the 2016 RACV Ladies Golf Coast Challenge at Royal Pines.
Now in its 26th year, previous winners include Adam Scott, Steven Bowditch, Karrie Webb and Minjee Lee with the new 2016 winners grateful to hoist their name on such a respectful trophy.
Junior Golf Queensland offers a sincere thank you to Palmer Golf, Titleist, Footjoy and Fayde for their continued support of this fantastic event.
